We generally dislike pain and discomfort and try to avoid inflicting this experience on others. **Fairness/reciprocity**: We try to ensuring that others are treated fairly. This is important for cooperating with other people. **Ingroup/loyalty**: Acting with the interests of your social group at heart. For example, helping a friend with their homework. **Authority/respect**: Trying to respect and maintain the authoritative structure in which you live. We often strive to maintain the traditions of our society. **Purity/sanctity**: This is driven by the need to avoid contamination and is linked to the emotion of disgust. This includes both the need to avoid disgusting experiences; from a spiritual perspective it is important to prevent contamination of the spirit or soul. Two additional questions were to check whether you were paying attention when responding. We would expect that you would not say that “//being good at math// ” is an important moral concern, and that you would agree that “//it is better to do good than to do bad// ”. These questions do not contribute to your final morality results.\\ \\ This questionnaire was developed by Jesse Graham, Jonathan Haidt, and Brian Nosek at the University of Virginia ([[http://www.moralfoundations.org/|www.moralfoundations.org]] ).
==== Items by category ==== Just grouped them together to have a clearer sense of what each category reflects:
__Harm/care__ - Whether or not someone suffered emotionally - Whether or not someone cared for someone weak or vulnerable - Whether or not someone was cruel - Compassion for those who are suffering is the most crucial virtue. - One of the worst things a person could do is hurt a defenceless animal. - It can never be right to kill a human being. __Fairness/reciprocity__ - Whether or not some people were treated differently than others - Whether or not someone acted unfairly - Whether or not someone was denied his or her rights - When the government makes laws, the number one principle should be ensuring that everyone is treated fairly. - Justice is the most important requirement for a society. - I think it’s morally wrong that rich children inherit a lot of money while poor children inherit nothing. __Ingroup/loyalty__ - Whether or not someone’s action showed love for his or her country - Whether or not someone did something to betray his or her group - Whether or not someone showed a lack of loyalty - I am proud of my country’s history. - People should be loyal to their family members, even when they have done something wrong. - It is more important to be a team player than to express oneself __Authority/respect__ - Whether or not someone showed a lack of respect for authority - Whether or not someone conformed to the traditions of society - Whether or not an action caused chaos or disorder - Respect for authority is something all children need to learn. - Men and women each have different roles to play in society. - If I were a soldier and disagreed with my commanding officer’s orders, I would obey anyway because that is my duty. __Purity/sanctity__ - Whether or not someone violated standards of purity and decency - Whether or not someone did something disgusting - Whether or not someone acted in a way that God would approve of - People should not do things that are disgusting, even if no one is harmed. - I would call some acts wrong on the grounds that they are unnatural. - Chastity is an important and valuable virtue.
===== SPSS syntax =====
compute HARM_AVG = MEAN (q1, q7, q12, q17, q23, q28). compute FAIRNESS_AVG = MEAN (q2, q8, q13, q18, q24, q29). compute INGROUP_AVG = MEAN (q3, q9, q14, q19, q25, q30). compute AUTHORITY_AVG = MEAN (q4, q10, q15, q20, q26, q31). compute PURITY_AVG = MEAN (q5, q11, q16, q21, q27, q32). compute decoy1=q6. compute decoy2=q22. execute.
