Locus of Control -

Locus of Control (from Levenson, 1981)

Full version

The full scale :

Internality

  1. Whether or not I get to be a leader depends mostly on my ability
  2. Whether or not I get into a car accident depends mostly on how good a driver I am
  3. When I make plans, I am almost certain to make them work
  4. How many friends I have depends on how nice a person I am
  5. I can pretty much determine what will happen in my life
  6. I am usually able to protect my personal interests
  7. When I get what I want, it's usually because I worked hard for it
  8. My life is determined by my own actions

Chance

  1. To a great extent my life is controlled by accidental happenings
  2. Often there is no chance of protecting my personal interests from bad luck happenings
  3. When I get what I want, it's usually because I'm lucky
  4. I have often found that what is going to happen will happen
  5. Whether or not I get to be a leader depends on whether I'm lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time
  6. It's not always wise for me to plan too far ahead because many things turn out to be a matter of good or bad fortune
  7. Whether or not I get into a car accident is mostly a matter of luck.
  8. It's chiefly a matter of fate whether or not I have a few friends or many friends

Powerful others

  1. I feel like what happens in my life is mostly determined by powerful people
  2. Although I might have good ability, I will not be given leadership responsibility without appealing to those in positions of power
  3. My life is chiefly controlled by powerful others
  4. People like myself have very little chance of protecting our personal interests when they conflict with those of strong pressure groups
  5. Getting what I want requires pleasing those people above me
  6. If important people were to decide they didn't like me, I probably wouldn't make many friends
  7. Whether or not I get into a car accident depends mostly on the other driver
  8. In order to have my plans work, I make sure that theyfit in with the desires of other people who have power over me

Scoring

Each of the subscales of Internality, Powerful Others, and Chance is scored on a six-point Likert format from minus 3 to plus 3. A person who has strong agreement with all eight items would score a plus 24; strong disagreement, a minus 24. After adding and subtracting the item scores, add 24 to the total score to elim- inate negative scores.

MHLC

MHLC From Levenson, 1973 :

Instructions

Scoring

Separate scores are obtained for each of the three subscales by adding the respondent's score on the six items in each subscale. The items in each scale on Forms A and B are:

  • Internai items (il—fLC) - 1, 6, 8, 12, 13, 17;
  • Chance items (Cl-lLC) — 2, 4,9, 1t, 15, 16;
  • Powerful other items (PHLC) - 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 18.

Since the score on each item ranges from 1 (strongly disagree) to 6 (strongly agree), the scoring range for each subscale is from 6 to 36. The three subscale scores should not be combined into a single overali score (see Comparison section on page 10 for explanation).

The scale

This is a questionnaire designed to determine the way in which different people view certain important health-related issues. Each item is a belief statement with which you may agree or disagree. Beside each statement is a scale which ranges from strongly disagree (1) to strongly agree (6). For each item we would tike you to circle the number that represents the extent to which you disagree or agree with the statement. The more strongly you agree with a statement, then the higher will be the number you circle. The more strongly you disagree with a statement, then the lower will be the number you circle. Please make sure that you answer every item and that you circle only one number per item. This is a measure of your personal beliefs: obviously, there are no right or wrong answers. Please answer these items carefully, but do not spend too much time on any one item. As much as you can, try to respond to each item independently. When making your choice, do not be influenced by your previous choices. It is important that you respond according to your actual beliefs and not according to how you feel you should believe or how you think we want you to believe
